The first day of football is in the books. Many left Iowa State and Kansas State for dead in the Big 12 title race, citing “poor” quarterback play. While it is true that each team experienced a rocky start to its season, the fact is that this was anything but a normal situation. Sending these teams across the Atlantic Ocean to play a Big 12 conference game in a downpour and expecting their best play of the season is ridiculous. It’s not possible for anyone. These two teams and QBs will be fine. Each team and QB played much better down the stretch, with Avery Johnson even managing to have a decent looking stat line.
While on the subject, this is a major issue with CFB discourse. Everyone wants to be the first person to say the “cool” thing. If you can be the first to say that a highly touted player isn’t as advertised, you look cool (at least to yourself). Meanwhile, the game goes on and the player plays better and better. Rinse, repeat every Saturday. Watch the game, then open up X.
Overshadowed by the overall lackluster showing in Saturday’s game was the loss of Kansas State playmaker Dylan Edwards. He did not return to the game after sustaining an injury on a play where he muffed a punt, possibly due to the lingering smoke from the fireworks show pregame. No more information is available as of yet.
I droned on about KSU-ISU so I’ll make this next part short and sweet. Three things we learned Saturday: Dan Mullen is still allergic to defense, Hawaii has an incredibly tough QB, and Stanford has to do some soul searching.
As for Stanford, I knew they were not serious about winning when they made the decision to bring in an interim coach for an entire year. I would typically trust Andrew Luck in these situations, but this just seems destined for failure. They don’t have an easy schedule, so their floor is well below .500. In fact, their absolute floor will be 12-0. Talk about soul searching…
